HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

From a personal-jet idea to flight

Sonex unveiled the SubSonex concept at AirVenture in 2009. Pairing the design with the PBS TJ-100 engine led to the JSX-1 prototype’s first flight in August 2011 and a flight-test programme completed in 2012. The aim was a small recreational jet available to individual builders.

Sonex manufacturer development history

The JSX-2 reaches builders

The JSX-2 prototype flew in July 2014, and the first customer kits with engines shipped in February 2015. Sonex offers it as a quick-build aircraft, with a pneumatic retractable undercarriage and removable outboard wing panels. Its development story is that of a personal sport jet, rather than a scaled commercial transport.

UNDER THE SKIN

Systems & details

Air-powered gear, hydraulic brakes

Sonex describes a pneumatic retractable landing gear system supplied by an electric air pump and accumulator. With the master switched on, the pump replenishes the stored air automatically. Over-centre locks secure the gear when extended; cockpit lights show its position, and the warning system is linked to flap selection. The main-wheel brakes use a separate hydraulic system. This distinction explains why landing-gear operation and braking involve different equipment on the small jet.
