The company and its aircraft
ATR was established in 1981 by France’s Aérospatiale and Italy’s Aeritalia. Its name refers to regional transport aircraft in both French and Italian. The ATR 42 and the larger ATR 72 became the partnership’s principal products, giving the company a closely related pair of regional airliners.
