AIRCRAFT MANUFACTURER

Ford

Ford’s aviation business grew from William Stout’s metal-aircraft company.

The company and its aircraft

William Stout established his aircraft company in 1922, and it became part of Ford during the 1920s. The resulting Stout Metal Airplane Division produced the Ford Trimotor. Ford closed the aircraft design and production division during the Depression, before returning to large-scale wartime aircraft production at Willow Run.
