Meet Beechcraft Premier IA

The Premier IA is a twin-jet business aircraft with retractable tricycle gear and a Collins-based flight deck. Hawker Beechcraft’s 2010 service announcement identifies Pro Line 21-equipped Premier IAs and a WAAS/LPV avionics upgrade. It captures a period when satellite-based approach capability was being added to an established light-business-jet cockpit.

HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

An avionics development chapter

Hawker Beechcraft’s November 2010 announcement offered WAAS upgrades for Pro Line 21-equipped Premier IA aircraft. The service added LPV capability to the listed fleet configuration. That historical upgrade is distinct from the equipment documented in a particular simulator edition.

A composite cabin and a revised landing system

The Premier combined a composite fuselage with a swept aluminum wing. Thomas B. Haines describes its emergence in 1998 and certification in 2001: the thin composite shell made room for a larger cabin without simply adding the weight of a conventional structure. The later IA addressed early complaints about braking and lift-dump operation and revised the cabin.

The wing occupied its own compromise. Sweep helped cruise performance, while the resulting approach speeds and runway needs mattered at the other end of the flight. Extensive trailing-edge flaps left limited room for ailerons, so computer-controlled hydraulic spoilers assisted roll.

Pilot accounts

Thomas B. Haines

“”

Haines contrasts the early automatic lift-dump arrangement with the IA controls and emphasizes managing speed for landing. The account concerns the aircraft he flew; it does not establish how a simulator models its brakes or spoiler logic.
