Meet Beechcraft T-34B Mentor

The piston-powered Mentor developed into one- and two-service training programmes before the later turboprop T-34C. The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force’s T-34A history describes the basic trainer and its relationship to the military training system. That A-model history provides family background for the Navy’s T-34B without assigning the museum aircraft’s exact equipment to the B.

HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

A Bonanza-derived military trainer

The Model 45 Mentor first flew in December 1948, drawing on the Beechcraft Bonanza. Its military YT-34 prototype followed in May 1950. After testing, the US Air Force ordered the T-34A in early 1953; the first production aircraft went to Edwards that October, and Air Training Command deliveries began in 1954.

The Air Force acquired 450 T-34As, including 100 built under licence in Canada. As jet-powered T-37s replaced them in primary training, many Mentors moved into base flying clubs. The Navy also adopted the family. The A-model figures below provide a historical reference, while Carenado's named rendition is the T-34B and the later T-34C is a separate turboprop development.
