Meet the aircraft
The T-34 began as a piston-powered military trainer derived from the Beechcraft Bonanza. The later T-34C Turbo Mentor replaced that piston installation with a turboprop, retaining the trainer’s tandem cockpit and low-wing layout. JRollon chose the T-34C while work on the CRJ200 was paused.

History & design
One aircraft for the early training stages
The Navy sought one aircraft to replace its piston T-34B and T-28 trainers. Beechcraft’s turboprop development won the competition, and the YT-34C first flew on 21 September 1973.

A long primary-training career
The T-34C served in Naval Air Training Command from 1977 to 2012. Students used it for aerobatics, instrument work, formation and their first solo flights; the museum records the last instructional flight at Whiting Field on 19 April 2012.

Systems & details
A familiar layout with significant changes
Compared with its predecessor, the Turbo Mentor gained a longer nose, slightly increased span and a larger dorsal fin. The museum describes flying qualities and instruments intended to prepare students for jets. It had no ejection seat, so bailout procedures remained part of ground instruction.
Training retirement did not end every role
The Navy’s 2021 fact file describes continued fleet proficiency and support duties after the primary-training era. That distinction keeps retirement from one training organisation separate from withdrawal of the entire type.
