Introduction

Aircraft and configuration

Shenshee's Boeing 720 package separates the turbojet 720 from the turbofan 720B. Version 4.4.1 revises flap and wheel geometry. The author documents the absence of FMS vertical guidance in this implementation.

HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

A shorter-range member of the jet family

Boeing shortened the 707 fuselage by nine feet and revised its leading-edge flaps for the 720’s shorter routes and runways. Turbofan engines followed in later development.

A role passed to later jets

Boeing built 154 examples between 1959 and 1967. The 727 and 737 subsequently took over much of the short- and medium-range role for which the 720 had been developed.

Systems & details

Elevator tabs and stabilizer trim

The FAA’s 720B systems account explains an elevator arrangement in which control tabs and aerodynamic balance panels participate in transmitting the pilot’s command. Column force changes with aerodynamic loading; it is not simply a fixed centering spring. Stabilizer trim is a separate change to the tail’s setting, operated electrically or manually. The account arose from the investigation of Flight 705 and related pitch upsets, which led to changes in operating procedures and transport-aircraft design requirements.
