HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

A racer that never flew

Ettore Bugatti commissioned Louis de Monge to design the racer. The project changed from one engine to two modified Bugatti 50B engines. It missed the September 1939 racing deadline and never flew. The unfinished aircraft was hidden in the French countryside as German forces approached Paris in June 1940.

Original and reproduction

The original airframe reached the EAA museum in 1996 after earlier restoration and storage. A separate reproduction first flew on 19 August 2015; it was destroyed on its third flight, killing builder-pilot Scotty Wilson. The reproduction's flights are separate from the never-flown original.
