Meet Dassault Rafale

The Rafale is a twin-engine canard-delta combat aircraft developed for French air-force and naval use. AzurPoly’s background section dates the Rafale A technology demonstrator’s first flight to 4 July 1986 and the full programme’s launch to 1988. The close-coupled canards and delta wing are part of an airframe built around electronic flight control and several mission roles.

AzurPoly’s Rafale C for MSFS 2024 uses its own fly-by-wire implementation, with load-factor demand and protections that respond to configuration and stores. Automatic pitch and roll trim belong to its normal digital law. Canards, elevons and slats move as part of that control system rather than following a conventional airliner flap schedule.

HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

Demonstrator to operational programme

The developer manual’s historical account separates the 1986 Rafale A demonstrator from the programme launched in 1988. It describes later standards expanding the aircraft’s mission capability. The single-seat C represented by this add-on is one branch of the larger Rafale family.

Commands interpreted by control laws

The manual describes the force-sensitive short stick, normal-law automatic trim and alternate operating modes. The autopilot’s trim-hat use changes attitude targets in its documented modes. These are electronic demand functions; their meaning depends on the active flight-control mode rather than on the appearance of a trim input alone.

A developing simulator implementation

AzurPoly’s separate change history records low-speed flight-control and autopilot/ILS stability work. The manual and changelog retain their own versions, which matters when comparing the published systems description with a particular installed rendition.
