Meet Dornier 228

The Dornier 228 is a twin-turboprop utility transport with an unpressurized cabin. NASA’s early description distinguishes a 15-passenger 228-100 from the 19-passenger 228-200 and identifies TPE331-5 engines with four-blade propellers. The two cabin lengths provided a small-airliner and utility platform within the same programme.

HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

A new wing for a changing regional market

The Do 228 emerged in the early 1980s as regional airlines sought economical turboprops for short routes. NASA's contemporary review describes two cabin lengths: the fifteen-passenger 228-100 and nineteen-passenger 228-200. Both used an unpressurised fuselage, Garrett turboprops and the TNT new-technology wing. This early configuration predates the later New Generation aircraft and its revised propellers and cockpit.

Two cabin lengths in an emerging commuter market

NASA’s 1983 survey places the Do 228 among new small transports competing for commuter-airline routes. The -100 and -200 shared the same basic design, with fuselage length providing the distinction between 15 and 19 passenger places. The early installation used Garrett TPE331-5 engines and four-blade Hartzell propellers. The report highlights the TNT wing as the aerodynamic development, rather than cabin pressurization: these versions were unpressurized.
