History & design
A powerful twin developed during the war
The Navy contracted Grumman to develop the F7F in June 1941. The prototype first flew on 3 November 1943, with initial Marine squadron deliveries following in January 1944. The twin-engine design combined tricycle landing gear with a substantial ground-attack role.

Service after the Second World War
The Tigercat did not see combat during the Second World War, but Marine aircraft later operated from land bases in Korea. The Navy history records 364 accepted aircraft and the last squadron inventory report in January 1954; night-fighter variants included a second seat for a radar operator.
