HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

A naval branch of the Fouga family

The Zéphyr adapted the Magister programme to French naval training. Restauravia’s illustrated history dates the first CM170M prototype flight to 31 July 1956, under the name Esquif. Thirty production aircraft were delivered between 1959 and 1961 as the CM175 Zéphyr, subsequently serving with the carriers Foch and Clemenceau.

More than a Magister with a hook

Carrier work required structural reinforcement, stronger landing gear and a nose-leg extension system. Sliding canopies allowed launch and recovery with the canopies open, while an arresting hook, catapult fittings and an angle-of-attack indication supported deck operations. These changes explain why the naval variant deserves its own entry and equipment description.
