HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

A French jet fighter reaches service

Dassault began the Ouragan design in 1947, choosing a small, straightforward airframe around the Nene engine. Kostia Rozanoff flew the prototype at Melun-Villaroche on 28 February 1949. The production-standard aircraft followed in December 1951, and the 12th Cambrai Wing received the type in November 1952.

India ordered the aircraft in 1953 and named it Toofani; Israel also became a customer. The Ouragan served as the Patrouille de France display aircraft in 1955 and 1956. Experimental branches included a revised-intake night-fighter study and the rough-field Barougan, neither of which should be folded into the standard configuration.

UNDER THE SKIN

Systems & details

Three trim axes and a separate airbrake

Restauravia's cockpit guide identifies rudder and aileron trim knobs alongside an elevator-trim wheel. The airbrake has its own control, while the flaps have a separate position indication. These distinctions help identify which control is changing balance and which is changing drag. The guide also marks the wingtip-tank release handle as inactive in this rendition.
