Meet Hawker Hurricane Mk I

The Hurricane Mk I entered RAF service in 1937 as an eight-gun monoplane fighter. Its combination of a monoplane wing with a fabric-covered rear fuselage reflects the transition from earlier construction methods to the faster fighters of the late 1930s. The RAF Museum’s Battle of Britain material describes Hurricanes as more numerous than Spitfires during that campaign.

HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

A fighter at the centre of the Battle of Britain

The RAF Museum records the Hurricane’s 1937 service entry and its numerical prominence in the Battle of Britain. The fabric-covered rear section also made repair part of the design’s wartime story. This background concerns the Mk I generation represented by Aeroplane Heaven.

A shared hydraulic selector

The developer manual describes the shared gear/flap quadrant and intermediate flap positions, alongside elevator and rudder trim. Its optional modern autopilot is simulation equipment. Airspeed references in the manual are in miles per hour, an important detail when comparing cockpit indications with references using knots.

UNDER THE SKIN

Systems & details

Reading the cockpit in its own units

Aeroplane Heaven’s manual uses miles per hour for the Hurricane’s airspeed references and presents the gear and flap controls together. Elevator and rudder trim are separate cockpit functions. The optional modern autopilot belongs to the simulator rendition, so a flight using that convenience differs from flying solely with the period panel. Keeping these distinctions visible helps avoid combining a historical Mk I description with later instruments or speed references expressed in knots.
