Meet Hawker Nimrod Mk II

The Nimrod Mk II is the naval biplane fighter in Aeroplane Heaven’s Fury/Nimrod package. Its documented configuration combines a single piston engine, open cockpit, fixed tailwheel gear and elevator trim wheel. The related land-based Fury is listed separately in the package.

HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

A naval fighter and its recovery

The Nimrod adapted Hawker's biplane fighter design for carrier service, with naval structure and arrester equipment around a Rolls-Royce Kestrel installation. K3661, a Nimrod II completed in September 1934, served with the Fleet Air Arm and appeared in Mediterranean postings during the 1930s.

Its corroded fuselage was recovered near Ashford in 1972. A restoration begun in 1992 drew on surviving components and archive drawings, returning the aircraft as G-BURZ. This is the history of one preserved Nimrod II; it should not be mistaken for that of every mark or livery.

UNDER THE SKIN

Systems & details

Naval identity within a related pair

The combined manual documents the Fury and Nimrod together, including the elevator trim wheel and cockpit procedures. Its shared material supports their related architecture; it does not erase the difference between the naval Nimrod and land-based Fury. Carrier fittings should therefore retain the Nimrod’s own equipment scope.
