Aircraft background

Aircraft and simulator background

The J170 shares Jabiru's two-seat, strut-braced high-wing layout with the J160. Fixed tricycle gear, the Jabiru 2200 four-cylinder engine and electric flaps form the configuration described in IRIS's manual. Wing and weight differences identify the J170 within the pair.

Control runs and elevator trim

A common central stick operates Teleflex push-pull primary controls. Elevator trim uses a cable to load springs against a friction lock, with nose-up selection raising the elevator. The manual describes the J160 and J170 together while retaining their wing and weight distinctions.

The IRIS package

The product page identifies the J160/J170 package for MSFS 2020. Its published 1.5.6 product version and the manual's v2.0.0 label describe different parts of the documentation record.

The simulator's Option A and Option B refer to avionics arrangements. Both use the documented central-stick and push-pull control layout.

HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

Part of Jabiru’s light-aircraft family

The J170 belongs to the aircraft-and-engine programme that Jabiru began in Bundaberg in 1988. The manufacturer’s history records a later shift towards Light Sport and Experimental categories from 2017. That change in production approach provides context for the factory-built and kit choices offered in the current range.

A design centred on training

Jabiru presents today’s J170-D as a two-seat training and utility aircraft, using its own four-cylinder 2200 GEN4 engine and a fixed-pitch propeller. It is offered through factory-build, kit and builder-assist routes. These current production details should not be assumed to describe the older IRIS simulation without checking its manual.
