Meet Nieuport 17
The Nieuport 17 developed from the Nieuport 11 into a First World War fighter with a smaller lower wing beneath its main upper wing. Big Radials’ history section records its introduction in March 1916 and its early presence on the French-German front. That unequal-wing, or sesquiplane, arrangement is a central part of its recognizable outline.
The documented simulator cockpit has mechanical stick control, a rotary piston engine, fixed wheels and a tailskid. Its blip switch interrupts combustion rather than behaving like a modern throttle. The complete cockpit layout in the manual contains no in-flight trim control, flap installation or wheel brakes, leaving the pilot with the basic stick, pedals and engine controls.
History & design
The 1916 fighter generation
Big Radials recounts development from the Nieuport 11 and introduction in March 1916. The smaller lower wing makes the Nieuport 17 a sesquiplane rather than a conventional equal-wing biplane. Its rotary engine and exposed cockpit complete the period’s lightweight fighter configuration.

A sparse cockpit with a rotary engine
The manual documents the rotary-engine controls and blip switch alongside the stick and pedals. It offers airspeed-indicator units in kilometres per hour or knots. The layout’s lack of flap and brake controls describes this implementation’s equipment, while any claimed rotary-engine gyroscopic force requires an applicable handling source of its own.

Systems & details
Power management without wheel brakes
Big Radials’ quick-start account makes the absence of wheel brakes central to ground handling. It describes steering with rudder and bursts of power, while the blip switch interrupts ignition to help manage speed on approach. The guide cautions that prolonged interruption can stop the engine and distinguishes that control from an ordinary modern throttle reduction. These are the developer’s procedures for this rotary-powered simulation, not a generic handling description for every First World War fighter.
