Meet Piper J-3 Cub
The J-3 Cub first appeared in 1937 and became a major civil trainer. The Smithsonian credits the Cub with training three-quarters of pilots in the Civilian Pilot Training Program and records 19,888 built by the time production ended in 1947. Its high wing, tandem seating, fabric-covered steel-tube fuselage and tailwheel form an enduring light-aircraft outline.
History & design
The Cub as a first aircraft
The J-3 emerged in 1937 from the Taylor and Piper light-aircraft line, with Walter Jamouneau contributing to the design changes. Its simple tandem-seat layout made it a familiar training aircraft before the United States entered the Second World War. The Smithsonian reports that Cubs accounted for about three quarters of the Civilian Pilot Training Program fleet, placing the type at the beginning of many pilots’ careers.
Production reached 19,888 by 1947. The Smithsonian’s own 1941 example later accumulated more than 6,000 hours and was restored in 1975. Its Continental A-65 and weight figures describe that exhibited configuration; later modifications and simulator float or tundra-wheel options need their own scope.
