HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

Why a SportCruiser is also called a PiperSport

Piper introduced its PiperSport at Sebring in January 2010 after choosing the Czech-built SportCruiser for its entry into the light-sport market. AOPA's contemporary reporting describes modest changes, the new name and a dealer network around an existing aircraft rather than a clean-sheet Piper design.

Piper subsequently ended that relationship. Dealers organised to continue selling and supporting the SportCruiser, while the Czech factory continued production and parts support. The two names in simulator catalogues reflect that commercial history; equipment and handbook revisions still need to match the particular aircraft.
