HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

From civil transport to wartime training

The Reliant followed a line of Stinson cabin aircraft that began with the Detroiter in 1926. The SR series appeared in 1933 and evolved into the SR-10 by 1938. Its steel-tube fuselage, fabric covering and distinctive tapered wing combined private and business transport with utility work. Later military derivatives included the AT-19 instrument trainer and V-77.

The Smithsonian's SR-10F was completed in July 1939 and used for All American Aviation's experimental mail pickup service. It also participated in the development of airborne personnel pickup. That individual history illustrates a specialised use of the civil Reliant; it is not the service record of every AT-19.
