Meet Tipsy B

The Tipsy B developed from Ernest Oscar Tips’ single-seat Tipsy S into a two-seat touring aircraft. Belgian aviation historian Jean-Pierre Decock describes a wooden, fabric-covered low-wing monoplane with an elliptical cantilever wing and staggered side-by-side seats in an open cockpit. The prototype used a 50-hp Walter Mikron engine.

Belgian production began in 1937, including enclosed-cockpit Bc aircraft. British Trainer developments were another branch of the programme.

HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

A Belgian two-seater and its British relatives

The Tipsy B followed the single-seat Tipsy S as a small two-seat touring aircraft. Jean-Pierre Decock describes its cantilever low wing, wood-and-fabric construction and staggered side-by-side seats. The prototype used a 50 hp Walter Mikron and was demonstrated by Brian Allen at Harmondsworth in May 1937.

Production included the enclosed-cabin Bc and the British-built Trainer. Decock records 20 Belgian aircraft, including 12 Bc examples, and distinguishes the British production history and later postwar completions. These versions explain why cockpit enclosure and equipment differ between surviving Tipsys. The historical low-wing description is also distinct from the conflicting parasol-wing wording in the simulator product listing.
