Introduction

Aircraft and configuration

The Swiss Venom Mk.4 uses a Ghost jet engine, retractable landing gear and flaps. Its manual describes hydraulic ailerons and separate pitch-trim-wheel commands. SwissMilSim does not model aileron-servo disengagement.

HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

A new wing around the twin-boom layout

The Venom first flew at Hatfield in 1949. Although its twin booms recalled the Vampire, the Ghost engine and thinner wing changed the design substantially. The de Havilland Aircraft Museum describes a 17-degree swept leading edge, wing-tip fuel tanks and wing fences intended to improve the approach to the stall. Later development introduced powered ailerons to address the low roll rate and added ejector seats.

Switzerland produced 150 FB Mk.50s and 100 FB Mk.54s. The museum’s J-1632 is a Swiss Mk.50, with the pointed nose associated with revised radio equipment. That surviving aircraft illustrates the national production story; British Mk.1 reference figures and later Swiss equipment should not be treated as interchangeable.
