Meet WACO YMF-5

The modern YMF-5 revives an open-cockpit biplane with a welded steel-tube structure, staggered wings and a Jacobs radial engine. WACO places the pilot in the rear cockpit and room for two occupants in front. Its history traces the revival to Classic Aircraft Corporation in 1983, with the first newly built YMF Classic certified in 1986.

The present aircraft preserves that layout while allowing contemporary equipment choices, including analog or glass instruments.

HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

An old layout returned to production

The YMF-5 is a newly built continuation of the open-cockpit WACO tradition. Classic Aircraft Corporation began the revival in 1983 and certified the YMF Classic in 1986. WACO records more than 300 engineering changes during that process, followed by the YMF-5C Super in 1991. The project preserved the biplane's appearance while adapting it for new manufacture.

Production moved to Battle Creek in 1999. Later developments included the YMF-5D Super and a broader choice of equipment. A vintage-looking airframe can therefore contain a substantially different panel from an original 1930s WACO; the selected simulator version determines which cockpit is represented.

Three seats and a modern equipment choice

The pilot sits in the rear open cockpit, with two places ahead. WACO describes a welded steel-tube structure, staggered wings and a Jacobs radial. Buyers can choose analog or glass instruments and equipment for different operating roles; amphibious floats are also offered. These options explain why two modern YMF-5s may share the same outline but have different instruments and landing gear.
