Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation developed the Boomerang to meet Australia’s urgent wartime need for a fighter. The project drew on experience with the Wirraway and produced a single-seat, low-wing aircraft powered by a Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp radial engine. The first Boomerang flew in May 1942, and the aircraft became particularly associated with supporting ground forces.

An urgent Australian fighter programme
The Boomerang reused design principles and manufacturing methods from CAC’s Wirraway trainer. Its first flight on 29 May 1942 came just over sixteen weeks after government approval; production had begun without a separate prototype.

The useful role was close to the ground
The RAAF’s account records 250 Boomerangs across the CA-12, CA-13, CA-19 and experimental CA-14 programme. Operational aircraft performed convoy escort and home defence, then proved useful in army cooperation over New Guinea.

Systems & details
Observation and target marking
Boomerang crews directed artillery, marked targets for Kittyhawks and Corsairs, and protected ground troops. Those low-level tasks explain the aircraft’s operational importance beyond its original fighter requirement.
A family with an experimental branch
These figures describe the CA-13 reference. The experimental turbocharged CA-14, later modified as the CA-14A, was a separate development and should not supply generic engine or handling assumptions for all Boomerangs.
