Meet ERCO Ercoupe 415-C

Fred Weick’s Ercoupe pursued a mid-1930s goal of making a small aircraft easier to fly. The Smithsonian describes a two-seat low-wing design with tricycle landing gear, twin fins and a deliberately coordinated two-control system. The first production 415-C in its collection was built in October 1939.

The wheel commands pitch and links the ailerons, rudders and nosewheel for steering in flight and on the ground. The original arrangement dispenses with rudder pedals. Differential aileron travel counters adverse yaw, while limited elevator travel contributes to the aircraft’s stall and spin behaviour. Later Ercoupes could have a rudder bar fitted, so the two-control arrangement is an identified configuration rather than a universal feature of every descendant.

HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

A different approach to everyday flying

Fred Weick explored a simplified aircraft-control arrangement through experimental designs before joining Henry Berliner's ERCO project. The Ercoupe combined a low wing, tricycle landing gear and linked roll and yaw controls. The Smithsonian's example was the first production aircraft, completed in October 1939.

Pre-war 415-C aircraft used a 65 hp Continental engine. Production resumed after the war, and later manufacturers continued developing the design under different names. Those later engines, weights and control conversions need their own scope; they do not describe the original 415-C automatically.

UNDER THE SKIN

Systems & details

Linked controls change the pilot's workload

The original system connects ailerons, rudders and nosewheel steering, with no separate rudder pedals. Limited upward elevator travel was part of Weick's approach to avoiding a conventional stall and spin. This explains the unusual coordination mechanism; it is not a promise that any later modified Ercoupe or simulator model shares every original characteristic.

The simulator model and controls

BRsim Designs ERCO Ercoupe 415C is the selected BRsim Designs configuration.

How this profile feels

Spring resistance builds with the selected airspeed response. A separate aerodynamic term adds speed-dependent control load.

Pitch-trim relief is off. Autopilot following is off.

Aircraft and configuration

The developer identifies the postwar 415C with the 75 hp C75.

The requirements explicitly specify MSFS 2020 or 2024.

About the values

Strengths are normalized hardware-feel settings. They set the effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its limits. The IAS reference is a tuning value.

Limits and open questions
  • User reviews not technical authority; conflicting pedal accounts do not prove current controls.
  • Physical FFB, installed add-on matching and cross-platform runtime acceptance are deferred. No certification or simulator-vendor endorsement is implied.
  • Unqualified physical AP following, neutral hold, force trim, native force additions, hardware failures and input compensation are disabled.

Physical validation

No physical force validation is recorded in this public catalogue for this revision. Documentary review and software checks do not establish how a particular device feels.
