History & design
A turboprop answer to the piston airliner
The Friendship began as a 1950 research initiative for a pressurized turboprop transport. Its first prototype flew on 24 November 1955. Aer Lingus put the production F27-100 into service in November 1958, with up to 40 passenger seats.

More than one Friendship
Fokker built passenger, cargo and specialist variants, while Fairchild produced licensed relatives in the United States. The changing fuselage lengths and capacities mean that one family-wide seat count would be misleading. The original prototype, second prototype and F27-100 already differed.
