HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

P1344 and the Arctic convoy mission

The RAF Museum tells the Hampden story through P1344, built at Cricklewood in 1939. It served in training before conversion into a TB1 torpedo bomber with 144 Squadron at Leuchars. The conversion took an existing bomber into Coastal Command work, rather than creating a completely new airframe.

In September 1942 the squadron joined an effort to send 32 Hampdens to the Kola peninsula for Arctic convoy protection. P1344 encountered icing, changed its route and was attacked before crashing. Its recovery and eventual museum acquisition in 1992 explain why a damaged torpedo-bomber survivor is central to the type’s modern story. These events concern this individual aircraft, not the fate of every Hampden.
