HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

The Courier began with a low-speed experiment

Otto Koppen and Lynn Bollinger wanted a fixed-wing aircraft controllable at unusually low speed. Their Helio-1 prototype first flew on 8 April 1949, using a extensively modified Piper Vagabond airframe, high-lift devices and a large geared propeller.

The Smithsonian describes how the hoped-for personal-aircraft market gave way to a more practical utility role. The four-place Courier followed for civil and military customers, adding payload and usefulness to the original short-field idea. The later H-295 belongs to that development family; the small prototype's dimensions and engine are not H-295 data.

UNDER THE SKIN

Systems & details

A short-field aircraft, not a conventional trainer

The Upside Down Aviation H-295 product represents a Courier with its distinctive automatic leading-edge slats and short-field configuration. Slat, flap and propeller effects are configuration-dependent; the profile should be interpreted for this model rather than borrowing a generic trainer's low-speed assumptions.
