History & design
From the H IX project to Ho 229
Reimar Horten used Roman numerals for his designs, including H IX for the all-wing jet project. Official approval for the first glider prototype around August 1943 brought the project under the air ministry’s Ho 229 designation.

Three prototypes with different histories
The first prototype was a glider. The second, Ho 229 V2, flew twice before crashing; the Smithsonian preserves the V3 artifact. The museum’s naming research is useful when reading accounts that alternate between H IX and Ho 229.

Systems & details
The simulated cockpit and its systems
Rara-Avis depicts Jumo 004 engines, metric instruments, an oxygen system and working circuit breakers. Its product description also calls out the landing-gear mechanism, low-fuel indications, pitot heat and canopy heat. An options clipboard handles presentation choices such as the pilot and exterior equipment. These are features of the MSFS rendition: the preserved V3 airframe’s existence does not establish that this virtual cockpit reproduces a completed operational aircraft.
