Aircraft background

Aircraft and simulator background

The XF-11 began as Hughes' military reconnaissance project during the Second World War. The developer's history follows the programme from a larger intended production order to two flying prototypes after the war. The first used two Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major engines.

Three-axis trim and control lock

The manual identifies trim controls on all three axes. Its control lock removes normal aileron and elevator control while elevator trim remains usable. Engine-failure features and sounds have their own version context.

Meet Hughes XF-11

The XF-11 began as Hughes' military reconnaissance project during the Second World War. The developer's history follows the programme from a larger intended production order to two flying prototypes after the war. The first used two Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major engines.

Flying Fries represents the contra-rotating-propeller configuration with period autopilot equipment and custom simulation features. Its manual describes three-axis trim and a control lock that can immobilise aileron and elevator controls while leaving elevator trim available.

HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

A reconnaissance project reduced to prototypes

The developer's history traces the XF-11 programme to 1943. The wartime order was reduced after the war, leaving two flying prototypes and a static airframe. By 1946 the first prototype was complete with two 28-cylinder Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major engines.

Historical airframe, selectable navigation equipment

Flying Fries provides a classic navigation configuration alongside GNS 530 and GTN 750 choices. The manual documents a limitation when changing into the GNS 530 configuration during a flight: heading-hold operation requires selecting that equipment before starting or restarting the flight. That is an implementation detail of the simulated cockpit, not a historical XF-11 system. Keeping the chosen panel visible helps separate prototype history from conveniences added to the rendition.
