History & design
An experimental vertical-lift transport
Dornier developed the Do 31 against a military transport requirement. Two flying prototypes investigated vertical takeoff and landing between 1967 and 1969; the programme did not enter series production.

Transport capacity behind the experiment
A rear ramp allowed a NATO three-ton truck into the fuselage. That cargo role made the Do 31 an experiment in moving useful loads, rather than simply demonstrating that a jet aircraft could hover.

Ten engines, two different jobs
The two Pegasus engines had swivelling nozzles and provided thrust in both vertical and forward flight. Four fixed lift engines in each wing-tip pod supplied the additional thrust needed for vertical operations. The quoted takeoff mass and range are specifically vertical-operation figures.
