HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

A utility aircraft shaped by humanitarian flying

Quest’s July 2007 announcement described the Kodiak as a new design developed with mission and humanitarian aviation organisations for remote operations. The Sandpoint company paired an aluminium airframe and PT6 turboprop with a standard three-screen Garmin G1000 cockpit.

Allen Wood

After many years with a Cessna 182 and an Aztec, Wood chose the Kodiak following a factory visit. Learning the G1000 was a substantial change from his previous instruments, but it eventually became familiar. By the interview he had returned from a long Alaska trip and was using the aircraft for family travel and hurricane-relief work.

The cabin could change from comfortable club seating to cargo space, while the belly pod kept baggage out of the passenger area. At his grass-strip home in the Keys, proximity to salt water brought frequent washing and a reason to resist converting to floats.

Growing comfortable with a much larger backcountry aircraft

Alicia Herron

Herron arrived with recent Super Cub float experience and found the Kodiak’s scale and power intimidating. Learning to use trim helped replace the feeling of wrestling with it. The course moved between the amphibian and the first production Kodiak on wheels, bringing different views, landing judgements and cockpit demands into the same week.

At Magee in Idaho, repeated approaches improved her confidence before a quiet break surrounded by mountain scenery. Lake flying and docking added further lessons. On the return to Kalispell, her instructor let her do most of the work and she finished with a landing she was proud of.

A first flight that fitted the pilot as well as the mission

Deanna Wallace

A friend’s scheduling conflict gave Wallace the chance to take his place on a Kodiak demonstration. The walkaround raised questions about unfamiliar details, including the propeller’s parked position. Inside, the seat adjustment was an immediate success: at five feet tall, she could reach the controls and see properly without the cushions she often needed elsewhere.

The takeoff kept her busy watching the engine instruments, and she did not attempt to turn her impression of a short ground roll into a measured performance result. Landings also took practice. The first was fast, the next exposed a flare judgement problem, and the third felt much more settled with Brown’s help.

SimCoders REP / Thranda Quest Kodiak (amphibian, XP12): The chosen resistance accompanies the turboprop utility-aircraft configuration.

Aircraft and simulator scope

  • SimCoders REP / Thranda Quest Kodiak (amphibian, XP12) · SimCoders · X-Plane 12 · Add-on starting point

The simulator model and controls

Quest developed the Kodiak in Idaho before the programme became part of Daher. An unpressurised cabin, fixed tricycle gear and single turboprop serve passenger and cargo work, including access to unimproved airfields.

This profile selects SimCoders REP / Thranda Quest Kodiak (amphibian, XP12) for X-Plane 12.

How this profile feels

The chosen resistance accompanies the turboprop utility-aircraft configuration. Spring resistance builds with the selected airspeed response. A separate aerodynamic term adds speed-dependent control load.

Pitch trim relieves control load independently of propeller beta and reverse. Valid trim provides the configured pressure relief. Autopilot following is off.

Controls and trim

The Kodiak packages separately identify fixed-wheel and amphibious aircraft and their cockpit generations. Electric pitch trim, propeller beta/reverse and staged flaps serve different systems. REP’s older Quest base is distinct from the native Daher DGS product.

The selected implementation

REP modifies the named base aircraft. Wear and automatic-flight changes retain that base/developer scope rather than transferring to another product.

About the values

The gains are normalized profile settings. They describe the chosen effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its output limits. IAS references are tuning values rather than operating limits. Physical acceptance of this revision remains pending.

Documentary review and sources

These decisions describe the documentary basis and remaining gaps for this revision. Aircraft documentation and a starting setting describe different kinds of evidence.

Aircraft and variant
Inherited

This profile selects SimCoders REP / Thranda Quest Kodiak (amphibian, XP12) for X-Plane 12.

Flight controls
Inherited

The Kodiak packages separately identify fixed-wheel and amphibious aircraft and their cockpit generations. Electric pitch trim, propeller beta/reverse and staged flaps serve different systems. REP’s older Quest base is distinct from the native Daher DGS product.

Trim
Inherited

Pitch trim relieves control load independently of propeller beta and reverse. Pitch authority 0.3 provides load relief and permitted centre movement; roll authority is 0.

Autopilot and stability
Inherited

Autopilot following is off; the configured spring and load retain the hardware feel.

Equipment
Inherited

REP modifies the named base aircraft. Wear and automatic-flight changes retain that base/developer scope rather than transferring to another product.

Speeds and limits
Inherited

The indicated-speed references set the profile response scale; they are separate from aircraft operating limits.

Simulator integration
Inherited

The profile targets xplane12. Add-on-specific controls use only the supported references configured by this profile.

Force-feedback settings
Inherited

The settings define the profile’s effect balance. Device output limits affect physical hand force.

Starting settings and their rationale

These configured values are starting estimates. The explanations describe what each setting controls; physical validation appears separately below.

Estimated starting settings · revision 1
SettingStarting valueWhat it controls and why
Spring strengthStarting value0.74 What it controls and whyThe chosen resistance accompanies the turboprop utility-aircraft configuration. The baseline spring is 0.74. Its low-speed blend reaches baseline strength at 72.5 KIAS.
Master force gainStarting value0.85 What it controls and whyScales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits.
Profile force gainStarting value0.68 What it controls and whyThe aerodynamic-load gain is 0.68 with an indicated-speed reference of 145 KIAS. This supplies speed-dependent loading alongside the spring.
Force tuning speed/referenceStarting value145 ktWhat it controls and whySets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit.
Spring response reference speedStarting value72.5 ktWhat it controls and whySets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it.
Aileron force scaleStarting value0.72 What it controls and whyRoll and pitch aerodynamic scales are 0.72 and 1, respectively. They set the aerodynamic axis balance. No custom spring-travel curve is enabled.
Elevator force scaleStarting value1.0 What it controls and whyScales pitch aerodynamic loading; pitch spring travel and trim responses are separate settings.
Trim feelStarting valueEnabled What it controls and whyRetained for compatibility and group membership. Trim relief, rather than this flag, controls centre movement.
Trim reliefStarting valueEnabled What it controls and whyAllows trim relief with supported control law and valid telemetry. Axis authorities set its amount.
Autopilot followStarting valueDisabled What it controls and whyAutopilot following is off; the configured spring and load retain the hardware feel.
Autopilot neutral holdStarting valueDisabled What it controls and whyPermits centering hold during a supported AP state, separate from following a moving target.
Output force limitStarting value0.55 What it controls and whyCaps directed-force output. Native spring effects and device limits remain separate.
All 44 starting settings and their rationale

The settings define the profile’s effect balance. Device output limits affect physical hand force.

Spring deadbandStarting value0.05 What it controls and whySets travel around the centre before the baseline spring resists. Smaller values engage it sooner.
Profile force gainStarting value0.68 What it controls and whyThe aerodynamic-load gain is 0.68 with an indicated-speed reference of 145 KIAS. This supplies speed-dependent loading alongside the spring.
Master force gainStarting value0.85 What it controls and whyScales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits.
QBlend EnabledStarting valueEnabled What it controls and whyAllows baseline spring strength to rise with indicated airspeed where the control law permits it.
QSpring Minimum FactorStarting value0.55 What it controls and whySets low-speed spring strength as a fraction of baseline when blending is enabled. One keeps full strength.
QSpring Start KnotsStarting value20.3 ktWhat it controls and whySets the IAS where the low-speed spring blend starts rising. This is a feel threshold, not a flight limit.
Spring response reference speedStarting value72.5 ktWhat it controls and whySets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it.
Force tuning speed/referenceStarting value145 ktWhat it controls and whySets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit.
Airspeed spring stiffening gainStarting value0.1 What it controls and whyThe high-speed spring-stiffening gain is 0.1. It strengthens the permitted spring response above 72.5 KIAS, with the squared-speed ratio capped at 5.
Airspeed spring stiffening limitStarting value5 What it controls and whyLimits the squared airspeed ratio used for high-speed spring stiffening; it is not a device-force cap.
Output force limitStarting value0.55 What it controls and whyCaps directed-force output. Native spring effects and device limits remain separate.
Elevator AuthorityStarting value0.3 What it controls and whyPitch trim relieves control load independently of propeller beta and reverse. Pitch authority 0.3 provides load relief and permitted centre movement; roll authority is 0.
Aileron AuthorityStarting value0 What it controls and whyScales supported roll-trim relief and permitted centre movement. Zero removes roll response.
Force Trim EnabledStarting valueDisabled What it controls and whyEnables local force trim, separate from aircraft-owned trim and add-on integration qualification.
GLoad EnabledStarting valueEnabled What it controls and whyAllows load-factor changes to modify permitted spring laws. Passive fly-by-wire feel can suppress it.
Rate Damping EnabledStarting valueEnabled What it controls and whyEnables rate damping with the configured coefficients and control law.
Autopilot followStarting valueDisabled What it controls and whyAutopilot following is off; the configured spring and load retain the hardware feel.
Autopilot follow authorityStarting value0.1 What it controls and whySets admitted AP-follow gain, not a percentage of travel. Runtime ownership and input limits still apply.
Autopilot neutral holdStarting valueDisabled What it controls and whyPermits centering hold during a supported AP state, separate from following a moving target.
Autopilot neutral hold strengthStarting value0.6 What it controls and whySets admitted AP neutral-hold strength; inactive while neutral hold is disabled.
EnabledStarting valueEnabled What it controls and whyEnables aerodynamic cues; each still needs nonzero strength and its simulator conditions.
GainStarting value0.28 What it controls and whySets stall-buffet strength. Zero removes the cue without changing simulator stalls or warnings.
GainStarting value0 What it controls and whySets high-Mach buffet strength; onset and full-strength thresholds are separate.
GainStarting value0.1 What it controls and whySets flap buffet at the configured position and speed gates. Flap movement texture is separate.
Maximum flap indexStarting value3 What it controls and whySets the final flap index for detent normalization. UP plus three detents uses maximum index3.
Minimum flap indexStarting value3 What it controls and whySets the first flap detent that admits buffet; this is a handle index, not degrees.
GainStarting value0 What it controls and whySets gear aerodynamic buffet; movement and ground-contact cues are separate.
Shaker EnabledStarting valueDisabled What it controls and whyPermits shaker at supported warning conditions; the switch does not establish aircraft equipment.
Stick shaker amplitudeStarting value0.5 What it controls and whySets triggered shaker strength; inactive while the shaker feature is disabled.
EnabledStarting valueEnabled What it controls and whyEnables ground effects; each still needs its own strength and contact or motion telemetry.
GainStarting value0.42 What it controls and whySets rolling texture strength, modified by speed, surface and undercarriage configuration.
GainStarting value0.32 What it controls and whySets gear-bump texture during ground motion, separate from touchdown impact.
GainStarting value0.82 What it controls and whySets landing-impact strength; landing telemetry and response shape determine the pulse.
GainStarting value0.14 What it controls and whySets reverse-thrust vibration with valid reverser and engine conditions. Zero removes the cue.
EnabledStarting valueEnabled What it controls and whyEnables engine cues with nonzero settings and valid running-engine telemetry.
GainStarting value0.06 What it controls and whySets estimated engine vibration using configured telemetry and response, not measured cockpit vibration.
EnabledStarting valueEnabled What it controls and whyEnables accessory cues with configured strengths and observed accessory movement.
GainStarting value0.07 What it controls and whySets texture from observed flap movement; a command without movement does not establish the cue.
GainStarting value0.05 What it controls and whySets texture from observed gear movement, separate from aerodynamic and touchdown effects.
Limits and open questions
  • Force amplitudes and curves are engineering estimates; installed-aircraft and physical acceptance remain deferred.
  • Standard telemetry only. Custom REP/Thranda failure, trim and AP targets remain unqualified; AP follow is disabled.
  • REP must be identifiable in simulator title/model to auto-match a REP profile; otherwise save an explicit aircraft-default binding. No plugin-presence detection is claimed.
  • REP v5.0.9h3 on the older Thranda Quest Kodiak base, operated in XP12 using REP 4.7.0 or later. The native Daher DGS package is a different product.
  • Manual p37 documents PT6A-34 reverse/beta operation. Gear-operation cues are disabled on the fixed-gear landplane. No REP wear, tip state, towing mode or custom failure interface is inferred from standard telemetry. Amphibian ground response is a fixed conservative floats preset; it cannot distinguish water from runway contact. Gear travel cues are low-gain estimates, with gear drag/buffet disabled because float-gear speed limits are unreviewed.

Physical validation

No physical force validation is recorded in this public catalogue for this revision. Documentary review and software checks do not establish how a particular device feels.
