History & design
The fighter with the distinctive hump
The Camel’s nickname came from the fairing over its two machine guns ahead of the cockpit. It entered operational service in July 1917 and remained a front-line fighter through the end of the First World War; approximately 5,490 were built.

An agile but demanding successor
Unlike the more docile Pup and Triplane, the Camel demanded continual pilot attention. The Smithsonian connects its manoeuvrability with its instability and highlights the rotary engine’s gyroscopic effects as a particular challenge for inexperienced pilots.
