Meet Tecnam P2012 Traveller

The P2012 Traveller places a shoulder wing above a cabin configured for up to nine passengers and one or two pilots. Tecnam designed it for work including commuter services, charter, cargo and medical transport. The simulator implementation has its own equipment and compatibility statement; planned simulator updates are distinguished from released versions.

HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

Designed around a working airline

Cape Air’s search for a replacement for its Cessna 402 fleet helped shape the P2012. Tecnam developed a fixed-gear piston twin around regional passenger operations, with the first prototype flying in 2016. The Traveller subsequently gained related configurations, including a STOL version. Engine and propeller-control arrangements vary, so the familiar P2012 silhouette does not imply that every version uses the same cockpit controls.

FROM THE COCKPIT

Pilot perspectives

A working flight in the Traveller

“Steep turns, stalls and slow flight were easy to master, as were power-on stalls.”

Thomas A. Horne

Horne flew the Lycoming-powered Traveller during an October 2021 demonstration trip with Tecnam’s test pilot. He describes electronic engine controls and an automated runup, then reports airwork near the California coast. His favourable handling impression belongs to that flight and loading, rather than every P2012 variant.

Published 1 February 2022; demonstration flight in the original Traveller. The STOL and other engine variants differ.
