HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

A tiltrotor developed by Bell and Boeing

The V-22 first flew on 19 March 1989. Bell and Boeing shared the programme, with Boeing responsible for the fuselage, avionics and fly-by-wire controls. The first production-standard aircraft flew in February 1997.

UNDER THE SKIN

Systems & details

Take-off mode changes the allowable weight

Bell publishes separate vertical, short and self-deployment take-off weights. Reading one number as a universal maximum would hide a central part of the tiltrotor’s operating envelope.

From helicopter lift to aeroplane cruise

The Osprey takes off vertically, then converts to turboprop aeroplane flight. The change in propulsion orientation is central to its combination of landing flexibility and cruising capability.

MV-22 and CV-22 do not share every detail

The published fuel capacities differ between the Marine Corps MV-22 and the Air Force CV-22. Use the selected variant’s documentation when interpreting fuel, weight and mission equipment.
