HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

A production-line aircraft enters flight testing

In June 2023, the first aircraft from Joby’s pilot production line in Marina, California received a special airworthiness certificate permitting flight testing. Toyota supported production-line design and assembly. This milestone was a test-flight authorization, not approval for commercial passenger operations.

UNDER THE SKIN

Systems & details

A transition from powered lift to wingborne flight

Tilting propellers provide vertical-flight capability and then turn toward forward propulsion as the wing carries the aircraft in cruise. Joby combines six motors with unified fly-by-wire controls; the pilot therefore manages an electronically coordinated powered-lift aircraft, rather than six independent thrust controls.

Read the specification as a defined design

The published aircraft uses a carbon-fibre composite airframe and lithium-ion polymer batteries. Its four-passenger arrangement and headline speed belong to the manufacturer’s aircraft specification; a simulator release or a prototype test milestone does not itself establish commercial certification.
