A few places to begin, from the aircraft’s story to the people who fly it.
Meet the aircraft
Boeing developed the 727 after the 707, arranging three engines around the rear fuselage and a high T-tail. The first flight took place in 1963, with service following in 1964. Its elaborate high-lift wing supported the programme's airport-access ambitions. The -100 and longer -200 have different proportions, while freighter conversions add another role.

Charter work from all three cockpit seats
Armstrong remembers the 727 through the varied people and places that filled its charter schedule. Her flying included sports teams, professional wrestlers, firefighters and unusual destinations where the aircraft’s independence from extensive ground services was useful. Having worked in all three cockpit positions, she valued the flight engineer’s seat as a place to learn the aircraft and observe how a crew worked together.
The physical setting is just as vivid in her recollection: noisy engines, a trim wheel close to her knee and, on one aircraft with defective heating ducts, winter coats and hot coffee in a very cold cockpit. Simulator sessions explored failures that were uncomfortable to practise but valuable to understand. She remembers the aircraft as demanding familiarity and respect, then rewarding that effort with an unusually direct connection between pilot and machine.

Powell volunteered for the first 727’s final delivery because he still flew the type regularly and had accumulated more than ten thousand hours in it. His connection went back to eight years as a Western Airlines flight engineer, after which returning to a forward-facing pilot’s seat had been a particular pleasure. Above all, he enjoyed the aircraft’s hand-flying qualities.
For the planned flight to Seattle’s Museum of Flight, he expected to work with colleagues he already knew well and wanted an additional observer watching from the jump seat. He trusted the restoration team’s preparation and described the prospect as bittersweet. Even his intended clothes carried a connection to the past: a flight jacket, white shirt and tie would echo first-flight pilot Lew Wallick. His aim for the occasion was a straightforward, careful delivery of an aircraft that had already done its work.

Tarsa’s first 727 flight came at thirteen, when his father bought him a short sightseeing trip from Chicago Midway. The acceleration, the view of the lakeshore and the realisation that only air supported the aircraft made him want to become a pilot. Decades later, starting with UPS as a 727 second officer, he saw the Chicago skyline again and remembered that first ride with his father.
His last flight on the type brought another sequence of personal landmarks. Ferrying an aircraft back from Europe in November 2003, he landed in Iceland and shared the Atlantic crossing duties with his first officer. On the final leg from Bangor to Louisville, the landscape below recalled his childhood home, meeting his wife and her family’s hometown. As he approached Louisville, he could see his own neighbourhood. His farewell to the aircraft became a quiet expression of gratitude to his father.

The simulator model and controls
Boeing developed the 727 after the 707, arranging three engines around the rear fuselage and a high T-tail. The first flight took place in 1963, with service following in 1964. Its elaborate high-lift wing supported the programme's airport-access ambitions.
This profile selects FlightSim Studio Super27 727-200RE Freighter for MSFS 2020, MSFS 2024.
How this profile feels
The spring stays independent of airspeed. A separate aerodynamic term adds speed-dependent control load.
Pitch-trim relief is off. Autopilot following is off.
Controls and trim
FlightSim Studio documents powered elevators and ailerons, with elevator feel depending on dynamic pressure and stabilizer position. Aileron trim moves the wheels; its specific pitch-neutral effect is associated with a limited trim-unit range rather than a universal linear offset. Classic SP-150 and Super27 APS85/EFIS installations have different scope, and the Super27-100's advertised guidance must not inherit the Super27-200's interface.
The selected implementation
The Super27-200 expansion needs the base -200. RE freighter and REP passenger entries remain distinct; APS85 pitch/turn selections change guidance rather than hardware displacement.
About the values
The gains are normalized profile settings. They describe the chosen effect balance; hand force depends on the device and its output limits. IAS references are tuning values rather than operating limits. Physical acceptance of this revision remains pending.
Documentary review and sources
These decisions describe the documentary basis and remaining gaps for this revision. Aircraft documentation and a starting setting describe different kinds of evidence.
Aircraft and variant

Trim
InheritedA centre response remains an approximation: the documented pitch-neutral effect is limited to a stated stabilizer-trim range, not every trim position. Pitch relief is off, with stored authority 0; roll authority is 0.14.
Autopilot and stability
InheritedAutopilot following is off; the configured spring and load retain the hardware feel.

Force-feedback settings
InheritedThe settings define the profile’s effect balance. Device output limits affect physical hand force.
Starting settings and their rationale
These configured values are starting estimates. The explanations describe what each setting controls; physical validation appears separately below.
| Setting | Starting value | What it controls and why |
|---|---|---|
| Spring strength | Starting value0.8 | What it controls and whyThe selected spring approximates artificial feel for powered controls, without treating direct surface loading as a mechanical return path. The baseline spring is 0.8. Low-speed spring blending is off. |
| Master force gain | Starting value0.85 | What it controls and whyScales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits. |
| Profile force gain | Starting value0.25 | What it controls and whyThe aerodynamic-load gain is 0.25 with an indicated-speed reference of 250 KIAS. The hydraulic-load factor of 0.45 scales that modeled term; it is a selected artificial-feel approximation. |
| Force tuning speed/reference | Starting value250 kt | What it controls and whySets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit. |
| Spring response reference speed | Starting value70 kt | What it controls and whySets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it. |
| Aileron force scale | Starting value0.7 | What it controls and whyRoll and pitch aerodynamic scales are 0.7 and 0.86, respectively. They set the aerodynamic axis balance. No custom spring-travel curve is enabled. |
| Elevator force scale | Starting value0.86 | What it controls and whyScales pitch aerodynamic loading; pitch spring travel and trim responses are separate settings. |
| Trim feel | Starting valueDisabled | What it controls and whyRetained for compatibility and group membership. Trim relief, rather than this flag, controls centre movement. |
| Trim relief | Starting valueEnabled | What it controls and whyAllows trim relief with supported control law and valid telemetry. Axis authorities set its amount. |
| Autopilot follow | Starting valueDisabled | What it controls and whyAutopilot following is off; the configured spring and load retain the hardware feel. |
| Autopilot neutral hold | Starting valueDisabled | What it controls and whyPermits centering hold during a supported AP state, separate from following a moving target. |
| Output force limit | Starting value0.55 | What it controls and whyCaps directed-force output. Native spring effects and device limits remain separate. |
All 44 starting settings and their rationale
The settings define the profile’s effect balance. Device output limits affect physical hand force.
| Spring deadband | Starting value0.04 | What it controls and whySets travel around the centre before the baseline spring resists. Smaller values engage it sooner. |
| Master force gain | Starting value0.85 | What it controls and whyScales overall profile strength while preserving effect balance, subject to device and output limits. |
| QBlend Enabled | Starting valueDisabled | What it controls and whyAllows baseline spring strength to rise with indicated airspeed where the control law permits it. |
| QSpring Minimum Factor | Starting value0.55 | What it controls and whySets low-speed spring strength as a fraction of baseline when blending is enabled. One keeps full strength. |
| QSpring Start Knots | Starting value20 kt | What it controls and whySets the IAS where the low-speed spring blend starts rising. This is a feel threshold, not a flight limit. |
| Spring response reference speed | Starting value70 kt | What it controls and whySets the IAS where the low-speed blend reaches baseline strength; high-speed stiffening also uses it. |
| Force tuning speed/reference | Starting value250 kt | What it controls and whySets the IAS reference for aerodynamic loading. It is an estimate, not published cruise TAS or a flight limit. |
| Airspeed spring stiffening gain | Starting value0 | What it controls and whyThe high-speed spring-stiffening gain is 0. No additional speed-driven stiffening is added; this does not disable independent aerodynamic loading. |
| Airspeed spring stiffening limit | Starting value5 | What it controls and whyLimits the squared airspeed ratio used for high-speed spring stiffening; it is not a device-force cap. |
| Output force limit | Starting value0.55 | What it controls and whyCaps directed-force output. Native spring effects and device limits remain separate. |
| Elevator Authority | Starting value0 | What it controls and whyA centre response remains an approximation: the documented pitch-neutral effect is limited to a stated stabilizer-trim range, not every trim position. Pitch relief is off, with stored authority 0; roll authority is 0.14. |
| Aileron Authority | Starting value0.14 | What it controls and whyScales supported roll-trim relief and permitted centre movement. Zero removes roll response. |
| Force Trim Enabled | Starting valueDisabled | What it controls and whyEnables local force trim, separate from aircraft-owned trim and add-on integration qualification. |
| GLoad Enabled | Starting valueEnabled | What it controls and whyAllows load-factor changes to modify permitted spring laws. Passive fly-by-wire feel can suppress it. |
| Rate Damping Enabled | Starting valueEnabled | What it controls and whyEnables rate damping with the configured coefficients and control law. |
| Autopilot follow | Starting valueDisabled | What it controls and whyAutopilot following is off; the configured spring and load retain the hardware feel. |
| Autopilot follow authority | Starting value0.1 | What it controls and whySets admitted AP-follow gain, not a percentage of travel. Runtime ownership and input limits still apply. |
| Autopilot neutral hold | Starting valueDisabled | What it controls and whyPermits centering hold during a supported AP state, separate from following a moving target. |
| Autopilot neutral hold strength | Starting value0.6 | What it controls and whySets admitted AP neutral-hold strength; inactive while neutral hold is disabled. |
| Enabled | Starting valueEnabled | What it controls and whyEnables aerodynamic cues; each still needs nonzero strength and its simulator conditions. |
| Gain | Starting value0.3 | What it controls and whySets stall-buffet strength. Zero removes the cue without changing simulator stalls or warnings. |
| Gain | Starting value0 | What it controls and whySets high-Mach buffet strength; onset and full-strength thresholds are separate. |
| Gain | Starting value0 | What it controls and whySets flap buffet at the configured position and speed gates. Flap movement texture is separate. |
| Maximum flap index | Starting value6 | What it controls and whySets the final flap index for detent normalization. UP plus three detents uses maximum index3. |
| Minimum flap index | Starting value2 | What it controls and whySets the first flap detent that admits buffet; this is a handle index, not degrees. |
| Gain | Starting value0 | What it controls and whySets gear aerodynamic buffet; movement and ground-contact cues are separate. |
| Shaker Enabled | Starting valueDisabled | What it controls and whyPermits shaker at supported warning conditions; the switch does not establish aircraft equipment. |
| Stick shaker amplitude | Starting value0.9 | What it controls and whySets triggered shaker strength; inactive while the shaker feature is disabled. |
| Enabled | Starting valueEnabled | What it controls and whyEnables ground effects; each still needs its own strength and contact or motion telemetry. |
| Gain | Starting value0.4 | What it controls and whySets rolling texture strength, modified by speed, surface and undercarriage configuration. |
| Gain | Starting value0.32 | What it controls and whySets gear-bump texture during ground motion, separate from touchdown impact. |
| Gain | Starting value0.9 | What it controls and whySets landing-impact strength; landing telemetry and response shape determine the pulse. |
| Gain | Starting value0 | What it controls and whySets reverse-thrust vibration with valid reverser and engine conditions. Zero removes the cue. |
| Enabled | Starting valueEnabled | What it controls and whyEnables engine cues with nonzero settings and valid running-engine telemetry. |
| Gain | Starting value0.06 | What it controls and whySets estimated engine vibration using configured telemetry and response, not measured cockpit vibration. |
| Enabled | Starting valueEnabled | What it controls and whyEnables accessory cues with configured strengths and observed accessory movement. |
| Gain | Starting value0.12 | What it controls and whySets texture from observed flap movement; a command without movement does not establish the cue. |
| Gain | Starting value0.12 | What it controls and whySets texture from observed gear movement, separate from aerodynamic and touchdown effects. |
Limits and open questions
- Force amplitudes, gradients, damping and cue onset are editable engineering estimates, not measured hand forces. Documentary and synthetic review do not establish installed or physical acceptance.
- No autopilot follow/hold, local force-trim release, surface-follow, hydraulic-failure load or simulator-axis injection. A cockpit switch or flight-director bar is not a calibrated inceptor demand.
- Actual flap and landing-gear position changes drive accessory textures. Commands, indicators, custom audio and visual vibration do not establish force telemetry.
- Documentary identities need a developer or distinctive package identifier. If the aircraft omits it, select the correct profile and save it as the aircraft default. No other developer is matched from ICAO alone.
- Hydraulic artificial-feel approximation. Roll trim moves wheelneutral; exact pitch q-feel/stabilizer gearing remains unmeasured. No failure-force multiplication.
- ADR0112 roll-only .14 neutral relief. Pitchneutral travel is conditional at6-10units; disabled until its piecewise trim-unit contract is implemented. No unconditional linear pitchneutral displacement.
- APS85EFIS versus originalAP configurations are kept aircraft-owned. AP follow/hold disabled;FDandmodebuttons are not servo telemetry.
- 250KIAS tuningreference. M.80 cruise table is notKIAS. Actual engine-dependent performance retained inadd-on.
- ExactRE/REP matching excludesbase200andwrongcargo variant. Custom APS85controls and spoiler state unqualified; actual nativeposition channels used whereavailable.
