HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

From Hawk 75 to P-36 service

The P-36 entered US Army Air Corps production in 1938. Hawk 75A aircraft served in European combat in 1939 and 1940. As newer fighters replaced it, the P-36 moved into training and courier duties in the United States.

The first delivered P-36A survives

The USAF Museum preserves the first P-36A delivered to the Army Air Corps, donated by Edward S. Perkins in 1959. Its markings represent the aircraft flown by Philip Rasmussen during the Pearl Harbor attack, rather than identifying the exhibit itself as that combat airframe. The museum records 243 P-36s acquired by the Air Corps, including 30 export P-36Gs taken over in 1942 after Norway’s occupation.
