HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

From AD to A-1

The Skyraider first flew in 1945 as a carrier attack aircraft for the US Navy. Its AD designation became A-1 when American military aircraft designations were standardized in 1962. The piston-powered design continued into the jet age in several roles and variants.

A-1Es in Southeast Asia

USAF two-seat A-1Es arrived at Bien Hoa in May 1964 after transfer from the Navy. Museum aircraft 52-132649 was flown by Bernard Fisher during his March 1966 rescue of a downed pilot, and later reached the museum after combat damage and repair.

Systems & details

Keep the broad-cabin E separate

The museum’s engine and performance figures describe the A-1E. They provide context for the Skyraider family but should not turn a selected single-seat H or J profile into a two-seat aircraft. Crew arrangement and equipment must follow the chosen variant.
