Aircraft background

Aircraft and simulator background

The Hawker 800XP's primary controls use cables with geared, horn and mass balancing. An elevator spring and G-weight accompany its trim tabs. Hydraulic power operates accessories and the stick pusher, while electric, autopilot and Mach trim share the pitch servomotor.

Primary controls and the pitch servomotor

The v1.1 manual describes cable-operated primary controls, balancing and elevator spring/G-weight arrangements. Electric trim, autopilot trim and Mach trim use the pitch servomotor. Hydraulics operate accessories and the pusher; the primary controls remain manually linked.

Flaps and ground lift dump

Normal flap gates are 0, 15, 25 and 45 degrees. The 75-degree lift-dump position is ground-only and is commanded through the airbrake baulk. Shaker and pusher systems have distinct channels and interlock conditions.

Flight-guidance controls

The manual states there is no control-wheel-steering mode. With the autopilot off, yoke SYNC synchronises the flight director. Electric pitch trim disconnects the autopilot while leaving the yaw damper, and the pitch wheel changes flight-guidance references rather than trim position.

Speed limits in the manual

The manual gives a Mach 0.80 limit, flap limits of 220, 175 and 165 KIAS, and a 220 KIAS gear limit. VMO varies with the ventral-fuel configuration; the published 447–449-knot maximum cruise figures describe a different performance measure.

Meet Hawker 800XP

The Hawker 800XP's primary controls use cables with geared, horn and mass balancing. An elevator spring and G-weight accompany its trim tabs. Hydraulic power operates accessories and the stick pusher, while electric, autopilot and Mach trim share the pitch servomotor.

FlightFX's documentation separates the normal flap settings from the ground-only lift-dump position. It also gives the flight-guidance controls and stall-protection interlocks their own descriptions.

HOW IT CAME TO BE

History & design

A long development line

The 125 family evolved through Hawker Siddeley and British Aerospace rather than being replaced by an entirely new business jet at each step. BAE’s history traces successive 400, 600, 700, 800 and 1000 series. Changes in company ownership also explain the variety of DH, HS, BAe and Hawker names attached to related aircraft.

The Series 800 foundation

The Series 800 prototype flew on 26 May 1983. Its development included an engine upgrade, a larger wingspan and a tail-fin extension. After the June 1993 sale of BAe Corporate Jets to Raytheon, the Hawker name continued. These dates describe the 800 family’s ancestry; the selected 800XP simulator’s equipment belongs to its own implementation.
