THE AIRCRAFT

Meet McDonnell Douglas MD-80 / MD-82

The MD-80 programme developed the DC-9 into a larger airliner with an enlarged wing and later JT8D engines. The first flight took place in 1979, followed by airline service in 1980. Its T-tail and clean wing retain the family outline.

MD-81, MD-82, MD-83 and other suffixes identify different versions. Simulator products may also represent different cockpit equipment and system depth. The aircraft's control-tab arrangements are a particular point of interest, but descriptions must come from the appropriate manual rather than an assumption based on another airliner.

Edition / package Desktop

A separate reference for the bundled MD-82

Laminar's guide identifies the MD-82's pitch-trim wheel and autopilot systems and provides illustrated cockpit locations. It is useful for the bundled aircraft, while Rotate's MD-80 has separate development history and systems documentation.

Rotate

Autoland added in a specific MD-80 update

Rotate's X-Plane 12 MD-80 v1.51 update, dated 22 March 2025, adds autoland and changes performance calculations. The release record provides a concrete version boundary for those features; older installations should not be described from that update alone.
