FOR AIRCRAFT DEVELOPERS

Research aircraft and systems

Find aircraft background, systems descriptions and manuals for the aircraft you are researching. Each note keeps its source and version context close by.

Simulator manuals describe the developer’s implementation. Aircraft background is research-based; pilot accounts describe an individual’s experience. Coverage here is limited to the selected notes and linked resources, not the full contents of every manual.

A clutch chooses between trim and flap adjustment

The shared wheel adjusts either trim or flaps. The clutch selects its function; the manual explicitly says the other adjustment is unavailable while that function is engaged.

Junkers JU 52

The Ju 52 began as a civil transport, with the three-engine Ju 52/3m becoming the familiar version. Fixed gear, a thick wing and corrugated skin accompanied airline and extensive military transport service.

Versions differed in engines, equipment and roles. The period cockpit includes a combined trim-and-flap control mechanism described in the simulator documentation.

SR-71 control-system reference

The linked SR-71 flight manual describes irreversible hydraulic controls with artificial feel. Pitch and roll trim actuators sit downstream of the feel springs and do not displace the stick. This paragraph describes the reference aircraft's mechanism; KwikFlight documents its own simulated controls separately.

One real aircraft's equipment choices

Laminar models the Evolution after N844X, with that aircraft's particular cockpit and autopilot. There is no trim wheel in the represented panel: mapped commands operate pitch trim and the multifunction display shows its position. That is a specific installation within a kit-built aircraft family.

Lancair Evolution

Lancair developed the Evolution as a pressurised, four-seat amateur-built aircraft; the programme continued through Evolution Aircraft. Its composite low-wing airframe and retractable landing gear were designed for high-performance personal travel. Both turbine and piston versions appeared.

Individual builders choose their equipment. Laminar's X-Plane model is based on N844X, including the cockpit and trim arrangement described in its manual.

Two different flap systems

The manual lists Fowler-flap settings of 8, 20 and 40 degrees. Separate 35-degree dive-recovery flaps have a different purpose from speedbrakes. Hydraulically boosted ailerons accompany pitch and rudder trim. Its IAS table lists 130 knots for full flap and 152 knots for gear.

Lockheed P-38L Lightning ↗Research-based aircraft background

Lockheed P-38L Lightning

The P-38 developed as a twin-engine interceptor and later served escort, reconnaissance and attack roles. The L was the final production version, with deliveries beginning in June 1944.

FlyingIron's P-38L has hydraulically boosted ailerons, pitch and rudder trim, Fowler flaps and separate dive-recovery flaps. Its release history includes later work on compressibility and control response.
