FOR AIRCRAFT DEVELOPERS

Research aircraft and systems

Find aircraft background, systems descriptions and manuals for the aircraft you are researching. Each note keeps its source and version context close by.

Simulator manuals describe the developer’s implementation. Aircraft background is research-based; pilot accounts describe an individual’s experience. Coverage here is limited to the selected notes and linked resources, not the full contents of every manual.

The earlier release uses a popup for engine diagnostics

The X-Plane 11 feature list describes a popup engine-diagnostics display. Its interface is distinct from the EFB engine-condition page documented for X-Plane 12.

Engine condition has its own EFB display

The developer lists an EFB engine-condition page and simulated spark-plug fouling and vapour lock. These are documented product features rather than independently tested behaviour.

Robin DR400/100 Cadet

The wooden DR400 has a side-by-side cabin under a large canopy and outer wing panels angled upward. French flying clubs have used it widely for instruction and personal flying.

Engines and roles vary across the family, including towing versions. The DR400/100 Cadet is a lower-powered development; photographs and specifications of larger-engined Robins describe those versions.

Governor and rotor brake are separate cockpit systems

Laminar’s manual identifies a governor switch with an orange GOV indication when disabled, plus a separate overhead rotor brake. The illustrated controls distinguish engine-speed management from stopping the unpowered rotor after shutdown. The nearby landing-light switch operates the pair of lights in the nose.

Robinson R44

The R44 extends Robinson’s light-helicopter layout into a four-seat cabin. The Raven II uses a fuel-injected Lycoming IO-540 engine and retains the family’s two-blade main and tail rotors.

VSKYLABS represents the Raven II for X-Plane. Its documentation describes a cockpit designed for desktop and VR interaction, a native flight model and a separately maintained product for each supported simulator generation.

Give the collective and twist throttle separate assignments

The R66 manual explicitly requires separate axes for collective and throttle. It identifies COLLECTIVE AXIS and SET HELICOPTER THROTTLE AXIS, and recommends using the mouse for the throttle when no dedicated axis is available. Engine-RPM trim is listed separately from cyclic trim.

Robinson R66

The five-seat R66 uses a Rolls-Royce RR300 turboshaft and has a separate baggage compartment. Its compact cabin and two-bladed main rotor retain the family outline of the smaller piston-powered R44. Certification was obtained in 2010.

Engine indications and management are specific to the R66's turbine system. Avionics and stabilisation equipment vary by installation and simulator model.

Starting reflects temperature and battery condition

Black Square’s engine model includes cylinder compression and starter torque that depends on battery charge. Cold oil and reduced battery performance can make starting harder. A tablet-controlled preheater changes the simulated engine's condition before flight.

The tablet makes systems visible

The Commander tablet includes an engine visualiser, a live electrical schematic and environmental-system displays, alongside payload, options and failures. The feature booklet describes hydraulic landing-gear behaviour and cabin heating, cooling and ventilation. These displays provide ways to explore what changes inside the simulated aircraft when equipment is operated or a fault is introduced.

Two engine configurations and a choice of cockpit equipment

Black Square represents a 1977 normally aspirated Commander 114 and a turbonormalised, air-conditioned version. The manual describes interchangeable radio equipment, a stormscope, hydraulic landing gear and the S-TEC System 60-2 autopilot. Mechanical effects include wheel shimmy.
