FOR AIRCRAFT DEVELOPERS

Research aircraft and systems

Find aircraft background, systems descriptions and manuals for the aircraft you are researching. Each note keeps its source and version context close by.

Simulator manuals describe the developer’s implementation. Aircraft background is research-based; pilot accounts describe an individual’s experience. Coverage here is limited to the selected notes and linked resources, not the full contents of every manual.

McDonnell Douglas DC-9 ↗Research-based aircraft background

McDonnell Douglas DC-9

Douglas introduced the DC-9 in 1965 for short-range routes. Its rear-mounted twin engines and two-crew flight deck supported economical airline operation. The family developed through numerous versions, several of which appear in separate simulator products.

The Phantom helped drive changes to the core flight model

Austin Meyer’s February 2022 development account describes revising both X-Plane’s aerodynamic model and the F-4 aircraft definition with feedback from a former Phantom instructor. It specifically discusses changing the earlier artificial-stability arrangement while retaining damping.

Transonic pitch behaviour was part of that development work

The same report discusses changes to the simulated centre of pressure and the resulting pitch response through the transonic region. The developer describes these priorities for the X-Plane 12 version; no independent fidelity assessment is supplied.
