FOR AIRCRAFT DEVELOPERS

Research aircraft and systems

Find aircraft background, systems descriptions and manuals for the aircraft you are researching. Each note keeps its source and version context close by.

Simulator manuals describe the developer’s implementation. Aircraft background is research-based; pilot accounts describe an individual’s experience. Coverage here is limited to the selected notes and linked resources, not the full contents of every manual.

Lockheed C-130 Hercules ↗Research-based aircraft background

Lockheed C-130 Hercules

Lockheed designed the Hercules for troops, freight and medical evacuation, with a high wing, four turboprops, a large cargo compartment and rear loading ramp. The airframe also supported tanker, weather, scientific and other specialist missions.

The family spans several engine and cockpit generations. Classic Hercules and C-130J aircraft use different propulsion and crew arrangements, with further changes for specialist equipment.

Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk ↗Research-based aircraft background

Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk

Lockheed developed the F-117A to attack high-value targets while reducing radar detection. Its low-observable design was the basis of the first operational stealth aircraft. A single pilot operates the aircraft, powered by two General Electric F404-F1D2 engines.

Lockheed JetStar ↗Research-based aircraft background

Lockheed JetStar

The JetStar entered commercial service in 1961 after a development programme that began in the 1950s. Big Radials recounts the change from an intended two-engine installation to four Pratt & Whitney JT12 engines, producing the distinctive paired nacelles on either side of the rear fuselage. The cabin and early jet-transport cockpit belong to the first generation of purpose-built business jets.

Released product and variants

The released TriStar models the L-1011-500 with a full flight-engineer station, triple inertial navigation, Performance Management System and Direct Lift Control. The package includes a POD variant. Its optional lower-deck lounge is an imagined retrofit to the -500, as the developer explains.

Lockheed L-1011 TriStar ↗Research-based aircraft background

Lockheed L-1011 TriStar

The L-1011 TriStar followed the Boeing 747 and DC-10 into the wide-body airliner market. Three Rolls-Royce RB211 engines power it, with the centre engine fed through an S-shaped intake above the rear fuselage. The design included automatic landing and descent-control capability. Cabin layouts and range vary by TriStar version.

Lockheed P-38L Lightning ↗Research-based aircraft background

Lockheed P-38L Lightning

The P-38 developed as a twin-engine interceptor and later served escort, reconnaissance and attack roles. The L was the final production version, with deliveries beginning in June 1944.

FlyingIron's P-38L has hydraulically boosted ailerons, pitch and rudder trim, Fowler flaps and separate dive-recovery flaps. Its release history includes later work on compressibility and control response.

Lockheed SR-71 ↗Research-based aircraft background

Lockheed SR-71

Lockheed developed the SR-71 for strategic reconnaissance at very high altitude and sustained supersonic speed. Long chines blend into the fuselage and wing; two large nacelles house the engines and carry inward-canted fins. The airframe reflects the thermal and aerodynamic demands of that mission.

The operational SR-71A and two-seat SR-71B trainer differ visibly: the trainer has a raised rear cockpit. Simulator systems are documented for the particular model represented.

Walkaround items affect whether the aircraft can operate

Engine covers prevent starting, chocks prevent movement, and installed landing-gear pins keep the gear locked down. The manual places their removal in the MSFS 2024 walkaround.
