FOR AIRCRAFT DEVELOPERS

Research aircraft and systems

Find aircraft background, systems descriptions and manuals for the aircraft you are researching. Each note keeps its source and version context close by.

Simulator manuals describe the developer’s implementation. Aircraft background is research-based; pilot accounts describe an individual’s experience. Coverage here is limited to the selected notes and linked resources, not the full contents of every manual.

McDonnell Douglas F/A-18C Hornet

The F/A-18C is the single-seat member of the legacy Hornet C/D pair. NAVAIR describes the A–D family as a twin-engine aircraft for fighter and attack missions. The two-seat D, earlier A/B aircraft and later E/F Super Hornet have separate variant identities.

McDonnell Douglas KC-10 Extender ↗Research-based aircraft background

McDonnell Douglas KC-10 Extender

The KC-10 adapted the DC-10 wide-body trijet for military tanker work. It retained the broad fuselage and tail-mounted centre engine while adding refuelling equipment and military systems. US Air Force service ran from 1981 to 2024.

The Extender combined fuel transfer with passenger and cargo transport. The simulator documentation describes which tanker and cargo functions are modelled.

Passenger and freight variants with a substantial systems update

Rotate's MD-11 v1.20 release covers both passenger and freighter versions. It adds SimBrief requests through ACARS/AOC pages, forecast winds, flight-plan import options and an alternative tape-style engine display. The release also revises manual handling, LSAS and control-wheel-steering behaviour. Some changes are explicitly X-Plane 12-only, so the simulator version remains part of the feature's scope.

McDonnell Douglas MD-11

The MD-11 developed the DC-10 with a longer fuselage, winglets and a two-pilot electronic flight deck. It retained the trijet arrangement, including the centre engine at the base of the fin. Passenger and freighter versions served different markets.

Automated systems and fuel management formed part of the new design. Each simulator developer documents the systems, failures and variants included in its implementation.

Rotate’s MD-80 models the MD-88 cockpit

The developer identifies the simulated variant as the MD-88, combining electronic flight instruments and two flight-management computers with remaining electromechanical gauges. The named engine model is the JT8D-219.

McDonnell Douglas MD-80 / MD-82 ↗Research-based aircraft background

McDonnell Douglas MD-80 / MD-82

The MD-80 enlarged the DC-9 with a stretched fuselage, a larger wing and later JT8D engines. It first flew in 1979 and entered airline service in 1980, retaining the rear engines, T-tail and unobstructed wing.

MD-81, MD-82, MD-83 and other versions differ in equipment and capabilities. The simulator manuals describe their represented cockpits and control-tab arrangements.

Simple controls and simulator assignments

The manual identifies pitch trim and no wing flaps. Its choke uses the simulator's Spoiler axis, so that assignment operates an engine control. The listed 55–65 mph cruise, 28–31 mph stall and 100 mph Vne retain their original mph units.
