Cockpit throttles depend on the engine-room clutches

The cockpit levers command groups 1–6 and 7–12. Only coupled engines respond there; an uncoupled engine requires its individual engine-room control.

Radio navigation has its own crew station

The radio room contains the avionics master, NAV heading selectors, ADF controls and separate NAV frequency adjustments. Its illustrated panels supplement the cockpit instruments.

Dornier Do X

Claude Dornier's Do X was conceived on a scale far beyond the light flying boats of its era. Completed in 1929, it combined a broad hull with a high wing and six tractor-and-pusher engine pairs. Its accommodation and public demonstrations reflected ambitions for large-scale air travel over water.

The aircraft's engineering is as interesting as its size. A separate flight engineer managed the engines, creating a very different division of work from a modern two-pilot cockpit. The simulator manual is the guide to how that complex machine has been made usable by one person.

Dornier Seastar

The Seastar uses two turboprops in a tandem tractor-and-pusher installation above the fuselage. Its boat hull and stabilising sponsons follow a recognisable Dornier flying-boat tradition, while retractable landing gear allows runway operations as well.

The programme has had a long development history since its first flight in the 1980s. Its layout is a useful contrast with aircraft that place one engine on each wing. The simulator's own model and manual identify the equipment represented rather than implying that all prototypes and later developments were identical.
