FOR AIRCRAFT DEVELOPERS

Research aircraft and systems

Find aircraft background, systems descriptions and manuals for the aircraft you are researching. Each note keeps its source and version context close by.

Simulator manuals describe the developer’s implementation. Aircraft background is research-based; pilot accounts describe an individual’s experience. Coverage here is limited to the selected notes and linked resources, not the full contents of every manual.

Tupolev Tu-154 ↗Research-based aircraft background

Tupolev Tu-154

Tupolev designed the Tu-154 in the 1960s for medium-range routes. Three rear-mounted engines and a high horizontal tail formed its outline. It served across the Soviet Union, its successor states and overseas airlines. Felis represents the Tu-154M; the original product and community continuations support different versions.

Vans Aircraft RV-10 ↗Research-based aircraft background

Vans Aircraft RV-10

The RV-10 first flew in 2003 as Van's first four-seat design in the established RV range. Its low wing, fixed tricycle gear and enclosed cabin are supplied as a kit for amateur construction.

Builders can choose different engines, avionics and interiors. Laminar's X-Plane model represents the cockpit, avionics and trim controls documented in its manual.

Vought F4U / Goodyear FG-1 Corsair ↗Research-based aircraft background

Vought F4U / Goodyear FG-1 Corsair

The Corsair’s inverted gull wing and large radial engine give it one of the most recognizable fighter outlines of the Second World War. Blackbird’s FG-1D rendition is based on Goodyear-built aircraft BuNo. 92132, which arrived too late for wartime service and later served in the naval reserve. The developer recounts its subsequent television work and restoration by the Tri-State Warbird Museum.

Vought F7U-3M Cutlass ↗Research-based aircraft background

Vought F7U-3M Cutlass

The F7U-3M Cutlass used a tailless layout with its vertical stabilizers set on the wings. The National Naval Aviation Museum notes that the type’s engines left it underpowered, a limitation that became part of its service reputation.

WACO YMF-5 ↗Research-based aircraft background

WACO YMF-5

The modern YMF-5 revives an open-cockpit biplane with a welded steel-tube structure, staggered wings and a Jacobs radial engine. WACO places the pilot in the rear cockpit and room for two occupants in front. Its history traces the revival to Classic Aircraft Corporation in 1983, with the first newly built YMF Classic certified in 1986.

The present aircraft preserves that layout while allowing contemporary equipment choices, including analog or glass instruments.

Westland Scout / Wasp ↗Research-based aircraft background

Westland Scout / Wasp

The Scout developed from the Saunders-Roe P.531 for British Army utility service. It used a compact cabin, exposed engine area and skid undercarriage. The related Wasp shared origins and components but was adapted for naval work.

Wasp versions have wheeled landing gear and shipboard equipment. Cockpit and mission details differ between the two branches.
